The Landscape of the vast area of Civita di Bagnoregio

UNESCO World Heritage Candidate

Visiting Bagnoregio and the surrounding area, known as "Valle dei Calanchi", is one of the most exciting experiences that can be done when in Central Italy.

This is the birthplace of something unique in the world. This place's very distinct traits, in fact, can tell us a story of resilience by giving voice to the signs of different civilisations' passage: from the Etruscans to the Lombards, through the various phases of the Roman Empire period, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. A uniqueness that has been defined as 'The Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio'; an example of beauty and well-considered worthy of aspiring to be recognised as a World Heritage Site. Italy has confirmed Bagnoregio's candidacy for 2021.

Every year, from all over the world, more than a million people come here to see with their eyes this antique beauty. Bagnoregio defies time and the erosion of the tuff spur on which it is positioned. Civita is increasingly popular for lovers, who walk together on the bridge and arrive in the village to exchange eternal love promises.

This treasure chest of authentic flavours offers extraordinary goods from its soil, and the processes its raw materials have roots in a millenary culture.

TRA NUVOLE E VENTO: GENTE DI CIVITA

Brian Stanton racconta l'anima de Il Paesaggio Culturale di Civita di Bagnoregio Apertura 25 settembre / Palazzo Alemanni

The Landscape - The landscape of the vast area of Civita di Bagnoregio is unique. The encounter between the unfolding of nature and man's hand has composed a moving history capable of capturing the viewer's eyes.

Tonna - Twice a year (the first Sunday of June and the second of September), in a Civita suggestive square, it is possible to attend the traditional "Tonna": a donkey race. An event that stems from the rustic characteristics of the village.

Haze - Autumn and the winter periods are the ideal time to enjoy the natural games that the mists can create in the encounter with Civita di Bagnoregio. A very suggestive phenomenon that can give exceptional sensations.

Wild Orchids - Between March and April, the woodlands and countryside around the Bagnoregio area are pervaded with a magical and evocative event: the orchids' flowering. About fifty different species tell of a territorial reality rich in biodiversity.

Good Friday - In Bagnoregio, the representation of the last night of Jesus has four centuries of tradition on its shoulders, a rite of faith handed down from generation to generation.

Live nativity - In the Christmas holidays, Civita turns into a little Bethlehem. The Nativity representation's suggestive charm pays attention to the smallest details to transform this suspended city into a sort of time machine capable of making the visitants dream.

'The Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio' defines a site that extends over a vast area around Civita di Bagnoregio. It includes, in addition to the Municipality of Bagnoregio, also four other realities with homogeneous characteristics and uniqueness, which are: the territory of the Municipality of Castiglione, of the Municipality of Lubriano, the Municipality of Civitella d'Agliano and the Municipality of Graffignano.
